Dirt Work and Construction in Glen Rose

Dig almost anywhere around Glen Rose and you hit limestone within the first two feet. Soil maps put Eckrant and Purves soils under about half the ground near town. That is 4 to 20 inches of clay and limestone cobbles over solid rock. Down in the Paluxy and Brazos bottoms the ground flips to deep loam that floods.

Bankston's Builders does heavy-equipment dirt work across Texas, and Glen Rose is part of our service area. We clear cedar and brush off ranch tracts and build the pads and roads that follow. Our land clearing and site preparation work runs on dozers, excavators, skid steers and compactors. Call or text (214) 557-5106, and we will look at the job and put the quote in writing.

Land Clearing on the Cedar Hills Around Glen Rose

Somervell County is rough country, with limestone outcrops and elevations that run from 600 to 1,200 feet. The uplands around Glen Rose grow live oak, post oak, mesquite and mountain cedar. On the steeper Eckrant and Purves slopes, that cedar roots into a few inches of cobbly clay.

Clearing that ground is machine work. A dozer or an excavator pushes and grubs the cedar, roots and all. The rock underneath sets how deep the blade can go. The job ends with a tract ready for pasture, a pad or a road.

The sandy ground between the hills needs a different hand. Soil maps mark several Windthorst and Duffau sandy soils around Glen Rose as eroded, some of them severely. Strip them bare ahead of a rain and the gullies start, so we plan clearing and site drainage together.

Building Pads for Homes and Businesses on Somervell County Ground

Glen Rose is growing. The Census counted 2,659 people in the city in 2020 and estimated 3,033 by 2024, about 14 percent more. Somervell County grew close to 10 percent over the same four years, most of it outside the city limits.

About four in ten homes inside the city went up after 2000, and the county's median home dates to 1996. Nearly one in four homes in the county is a mobile or manufactured home. Each new house on acreage needs a level pad and a drive, graded so water runs away from it.

On Eckrant and Purves ground a pad is cut into rock, then built up in compacted lifts of select fill. Fill has to be hauled in, so the haul distance from the pit shows up in every pad quote here. Commercial pads along US 67 and SH 144 get the same work at a larger scale, road and drainage included.

Ranch Roads and Drainage in the Paluxy and Brazos Bottoms

The Paluxy runs through the center of the county and meets the Brazos east of Glen Rose. In summer the Paluxy normally stops flowing and sits in isolated pools. At flood stage on the Brazos near Glen Rose, the weather service lists ranch land and rural roads under water.

FEMA's new flood maps for Somervell County took effect in September 2023. The county floodplain administrator can say whether a bottomland site sits in a mapped flood zone. A road built there gets a crown and side ditches, with culverts sized for the water that crosses it.

Ranch roads on the limestone hills are a different job. The base is often the rock itself, shaped and topped with road base or gravel. Our ranch road building work covers ranch roads, long driveways, access roads and low-water crossings across Somervell County. We also build the stock tanks and ditches that go with a working ranch.

Commercial and Ranch Dirt Work Across Somervell County

Somervell County covers 188 square miles, the second smallest county in Texas, and cattle and hay lead its farm side. The Comanche Peak nuclear plant north of town and the ranches around it carry the local economy. Dinosaur Valley State Park, 1,587 acres on the Paluxy northwest of town, and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center bring the visitors.

Water for that growth comes from Wheeler Branch Reservoir, finished by the Somervell County Water District in 2007. The lake holds 4,118 acre-feet on 180 surface acres and runs 80 feet deep at the dam. The district's project list runs to water line extensions and storage tanks. Every one of those lines starts as a trench.

Our commercial site work here covers pads and access roads for businesses along US 67 and SH 144. We also trench for the water lines and conduit that serve them, with backfill compacted in lifts. Texas law calls for an 811 locate request at least two working days before mechanized digging 16 inches or deeper. Fort Worth sits at the center of our service area, and Glen Rose is part of it.

Glen Rose FAQ

Questions We Hear Around Glen Rose

A few of the questions we hear most around Glen Rose. If yours is not here, call or text and ask.

Call (214) 557-5106

How does shallow rock change dirt work in Glen Rose?
About half the ground near town has 4 to 20 inches of soil over limestone. A pad there is cut to rock and built up with compacted select fill. A trench may need a rock bucket or a hammer. We look at the ground first, because rock sets the method and the time.
Do I need a permit for land clearing or a pad near Glen Rose?
Inside the city limits, the Development Services Department issues building permits and tracks inspections through its online portal. Outside town, Somervell County's floodplain administrator covers work in a mapped flood zone, and a county office permits septic systems. Those offices answer the permit question for your site, and we point you to them.
What does dirt work cost in Glen Rose?
The price follows the ground more than the acreage. Rock depth, cedar density, slope and the haul distance for fill or gravel move the number most. Culverts and crossings add to a road in the bottoms. We look at the site, then put the quote in writing so you can see what is included.
Can you clear and build the pad for a custom home on acreage outside Glen Rose?
Yes. We clear the homesite and the drive, then build the pad, graded so water runs away from the house. For select clients we also build the house itself through our custom home construction work.
How far is Glen Rose from the rest of your service area?
Glen Rose is about 55 road miles southwest of Fort Worth, about an hour's drive. Granbury, Stephenville, Weatherford and Mineral Wells are part of the same service area. Call or text (214) 557-5106 with the location, and we will set a time to look at the job.
